The Bowen Technique
WHAT IS BOWEN?
Bowen therapy is a gentle bodywork technique that balances the nervous system, releases muscle tension and improves physical function. Bowen relaxes and realigns the body’s fascia and soft tissues through a unique form of muscle challenge and rolling action. It induces a relaxation response in the sympathetic nervous system and is best known for its ability to relieve chronic pain. It is a gentle technique for treating infants, young children, adults and people with limited mobility.
WHAT CAN TO EXPECT DURING A SESSION?
Each Bowen treatment is approximately 50 minutes, and visits are scheduled on a week to week basis. Patients lie or sit in a comfortable position, while the practitioner gently works on specific muscles and fascial bands. There are set pauses throughout the treatment where the practitioner is hands-off, allowing the patient’s nervous system to respond and integrate the information it is receiving. Most patients report a deep sense of relaxation during and after treatment.
